ABOUT

A new French-style home needed a garden to match; the owners loved Versailles and wanted a garden with that theme

The owner requested Fleur-de-lis, C-scrolls, potted topiary and formal boxwood hedging

The owner wanted no lawn out front, but low evergreen groundcovers were acceptible

The had a minimal budget and had selected a contractor before we were hired

Keep the style and the garden as French as Versailles. The owners travelled to Versailles and loved that garden.

Install a bicycle sidewalk in back and a large lawn for the children.

Bring the interior colors outside into flower colors and art.

Provide a spectacular entry to suit the entry of the home.

PROJECT GOALS

Create a formal French garden to match this French style home.

Consider the colors and style of the home's interior.

Provide planters and places for the owner to install seasonal color plants.

Keep in mind that the garden will be maintained by a landscape service.

Create places for children to play.

DESIGN CONCEPTS

A new French-style home was a strong influence in the design of this garden - front and back.

Fleur-de-lis, C-scrolls, potted topiary and formal boxwood hedging dominate the front garden. Instead of lawn, a drought-tolerant groundcover was used.

A retaining wall was designed to function as a planter, also, and uses the same brick facing to coordinate with the house.

Shrubs and flowers found frequently in French gardens, such as lavender and blue iris, are included for year-round interest.

The back garden will likely take years to complete, but the side and upper patio have been installed to access the recreational theater room downstairs. More C-scrolls, potted topiary, and formal boxwood hedging are envisioned, in addition to the retaining planters and stairs to navigate and hold back the side slope. Unlike the front garden, the back garden will have a large lawn for children.
