ABOUT

Create a clean contemporary style garden.

Use materials already in use on both the interior and exterior of the home, including bluestone, basalt, concrete and manufactured stone siding.

Soften rock areas with grasses and creeping plants.

Resolve the steep slope on the south side and create level living areas
Maintain good views of the Columbia River
The existing rock wall installed by the builder is out of character with the contemporary new home
The owners wanted a new entry that would clarify the location of their front door. The entry is at the side of the house and hidden by existing overgrown plants.

PROJECT GOALS

Make the entry more visually accessible, with a long reflecting pool on either side of the front door.

Create a living terrace off the family room and adjacent to the outdoor, covered pool.

Use low maintenance, primarily evergreen, plants and plants with white or lavender flowers.

Revise the existing rock wall so suit a contemporary garden.

Tie in the existing concrete wall at the corner of the property to new retaining walls that will provide more living space, a lawn off the new terrace, and resolve erosion issues to to severe slopes.

DESIGN CONCEPTS

This garden reflects the very contemporary, modern design of the home's interior and exterior.

Views of the Columbia River and Mt. Hood were maintained through use of lower growing or narrow, columnar plants.

We specified primarily attractive evergreen plants, concrete squares set into a lawn, a new terrace adjacent to the house and the covered swimming pool.

They wanted a long reflecting pool near the front entry.

The existing rock wall became a transitional wall with boulders near the street intermingling with the clad stone concrete on the way to the house.
